The german clarinetist, composer and Amadeus Award winner Ulrich Drechsler is a sound seeker!
He is constantly exploring sounds, which he then combines in the three independent sibling projects “Azure”, “Chrome” and “CARAMEL” into ever new stylistic combinations. All three are in turn part of his multi-disciplinary music platform LIMINAL ZONE, which has been the umbrella brand for all of UlrichDrechsler’s activities since 2020. With CARAMEL, he passionately and touchingly incorporates influences from jazz, neo- classicism, minimalism and film music, which have had the strongest musical impact on him in recent years. Ulrich Drechsler seems to move almost effortlessly between all the different genres, creating the CARAMEL experience. A unique, unheard-of overall sound far removed from any pigeonhole thinking. The main component of this music is above all the highly individual instrumentation of CARAMEL, with which a common language is found through attentive acting and listening at eye level. Ulrich Drechsler plays with the coloratura soprano Özlem Bulut whose radiant voice floats above the space-filling and virtuoso interplay of the rhythm section. Add to this the celebrated slam poet and rapper Yasmin Hafedh, who is able to juggle words in her inimitable way. The basis for all this is the highly dynamic trio consisting of double bass player Oliver Steger, drummer Raphael Keuschnigg and Persian pianist Amir Ahmadi. Like a small orchestra, they create the atmospheres, the great soundscapes that characterise CARAMEL. Ulrich himself mainly plays his favourite instrument – the bass clarinet. With its dizzyingly wide range and an almost infinite variety of tonal nuances, this large, ponderous instrument fills the space between soprano, recitative and rhythm section. The result is a deeply moving musical story, a soundtrack of emotions that gradually envelops the audience gently. Welcome to CARAMEL! |
